Being a military family, we move every 3 or so years, and one of the first things I do upon arriving is start looking for possible locations. Our last duty station was in Washington D.C. and cherry blossoms were a big deal for spring portraits there. Aberdeen Proving Ground isn't far from D.C. and I was hopeful that it would be a beloved location here as well. We moved into our home on the military post we are stationed at in the summertime and I noticed a row of trees that I hoped would flower in the Spring. The sun would set behind them and they were placed in a way I knew I'd get some beautiful shots. When the first Spring came, I watched those trees like a hawk and was so excited when I saw pink buds!
They aren't the same as the D.C. blossoms as they have darker pink flowers, but I'm told they are in the cherry family and I have taken my children's portraits there every Spring we've lived here. The last two years were more of traditional portraits just capturing my kiddos in a pretty spot. This year, I went all out with a styled shoot. If you have a little girl, Joyfolie is an amazing site to get beautiful dresses for so many different looks. I use them all the time when picking out outfits for shoots for my daughter. I got my boys' hats, shirts, and suspenders from Amazon. And I really wanted an old-world, vintage, painting-type feel when editing these pictures. They're not my typical edit. I usually edit more bold with a bit more contrast, shadows, and vibrant colors. These portraits are meant to look like a painting and I am so pleased with how they turned out! I have a few more sessions with these trees this weekend and then their beautiful flowers will probably disappear with the warmer weather sometime next week.
